For many people, the credit reports like a visit to the dentist - it is something that needs to be done, but they do not like it. This is especially true for people who have financial problems in their past, but the fact is, it is important to deal with your credit report because if you ever need to for a loan, which means that the lender will receive their information.
There are 3 major credit reporting services in the U.S.:
Equifax: PO Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374
TRANS UNION: PO Box 2000, Chester, PA 19022
Experian: PO Box 2002, Allen, TX 75013
Your credit report contains a history of your credit cards, auto loans, home loans and other debts. It shows all the late payments, how late they were 30 days overdue, 60 days past due, etc.
Each qualified lender have access to this information - a bank, mortgage lenders, credit card companies and certain other parties in court proceedings.
The credit-reporting agencies do their best to make accurate records, but errors can creep into your report. This is one of the main reasons that you need to access your credit report - this error can have a negative effect on all financial matters if they uncorrected.
Some of the most common errors are loans that were repaid as an active and longstanding canceled credit cards still as active.
With the copies of the reports from all 3 agencies, you can check for any errors or inaccuracies. They can be corrected, however. You will need proof of the error, you need to sent by registered mail to the Credit Reporting Service, together with details of the error. Ask them to send the data - by law they need to get all errors to them.
Recent legislation has it so that you will receive a free copy of your credit report annually, as long as you do not have more than one request per year, you should not have to pay for it.
