So many people have mortgages and credit cards for all their purchases in these days, it is important to maintain a good credit file. Therefore, it is also important to know how your credit report and clean it if there are any errors.
It is vital to your credit file periodically, and especially to understand what it tells you. There are three main credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Trans Union, Experian. Each company uses a different method for calculating credit scores, and each report is often something different. In your credit report is your full name, current and previous addresses, social security number, all open and active accounts, which recently closed accounts, and the hard and soft hits on your report.
The law stipulates that you are entitled to your credit report from each of these reporting agencies once per year. That is, if you time things right and only one body at a time, you can check the file essentially every four months for free.
